Great post. I think your kingdom (peace, satisfaction, serenity, spirituality, etc) is within you alone. You'll find it wherever you go, whether in rural America or in the bustling cities. Most is important is what attitude you bring to any activity, the intent, what meaning you attach to this or that particular thing. You value farming - and another person values cars. Each pursuit is no greater, no more "spiritual" than the other. I think we have the ability to find ourselves in strange places, most often it is much closer than we will ever know.

Thanks for your comment. I'm going to have to say that this issue definitely depends on perspective and geographic local. The rural communities I observed in New York when I have visited there were much different than the Western rural that I often picture. For these small western communities, there is no such thing as suburbanization, just cities. The eastern rural is much closer and denser and probably would benefit from higher urbanization. However, out in the great plains and the west, urbanization spells death for rural communites.

I think you are right on several accounts in this post (my thoughts about them in parentheses):

Many people don’t “see” the beauty of the plains (in part because their understanding of it is shaped by the banality of Interstate travel).

Many rural towns need to “tune up” the design elements of the town (bad design sends confusing messages to outsiders about the town).

And small towns often create their own fun through activities such as you experienced in Gladewater (through these events we experience a sense of community and entertain ourselves, without having to pay the entertainment industry to do it for us.)

I think you're picking up on generational/class differences more than urban/rural ones. My parents (and my fiance's) grew up in the same neighborhoods their parents and grandparents lived in (in working class/immigrant Philly and Wheeling), with predictably tight communities. My family lost all connections except blood as we moved around the country for my dad's job, while my fiance's family established connections in a new town by becoming actively involved in church and volunteerism.

According to Robert Putnam's Bowling Alone, this decline of community ties has been a trend in the U.S. since the 60s.

At any rate, I agree we need to go out of our way to establish the neighborhoods we want to live in.

My mother's name is Cheryl and was born in Waverly, NE outside of Lincoln. For some reason I have developed a great love for the Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming plains regions. I've visited many places in each state. I hope to live close someday if my fiancee and I can manage getting back on the ranch. They live only about 45 minutes from the Nebraska border.

I think it comes down to niche marketing.

You can't compete with economies of scale by selling the same product cheaper - but you can sell a different product for a greater profit. Lots of growers, especially near urban markets, are doing quite well selling boutique crop and meat varieties and intangible philosophy.

And, of course, it wouldn't hurt if subsidies were designed as investments in people and infrastructure and not crutches for the half-dozen major ag products.

I think it was great that you were able to talk to someone that is really live right in the middle of things. I think too often we assume what people and the consumers are thinking. Also I agree with Blair, I even find myself going to the farmers market more often now, since i am off the farm. the food just tastes better!

Great article. I am glad that your brought it to our attention. I guess I feel like the same thing could happen to agriculture. We could regulate ourselves so far out of business, that when food prices sky-rocket some of the power with be returned to rural american. I guess though I would just rather have our city dweller friends talk to rural people, and farmers and ranchers now, and get the other side of the story.

I am glad the author went to the heart of the situation to get the story.
